Theme:  Looking to the future

When: Thursday, 4 April to Saturday 6 April 2013

Where: University of Deby, Kedleston Road, Derby DE22 1GB www.derby.ac.uk

How to get there: click here

Geography teachers face challenging futures. Most teachers are secure about the part that geography can play in learning about the world, but what kind of world will our students live in? We make educated guesses about climate change and the world that our students could inhabit, but what about the kinds of work that they will do, or the environments in which that work will take place?

By 2014, it is likely that every child will study geography to age 16. How shall we excite students and give them a framework for looking at the world, in ways that will offer a legacy beyond their years at school?

Most of today’s students are very skilled in handling 24-hour media and news, access to the internet and social networking sites. How should our work in the classroom respond to the challenges of fast-moving technologies?

Curriculum reviews by central government will result in changes to what is taught to children in schools. How should teachers respond to such changes?

The 2013 Annual Conference will help us look to the future in three key ways:

By providing a range of examples about ways in which geographers see the future using different perspectives drawn from the natural and human world.

By exploring ways in which classrooms of the future might approach ways of learning, whatever the content of the curriculum, and provide some concrete, positive and inspiring ideas that can be put into practice back in our places of work.

By evaluating ideas about how to exploit some of the new technologies for learning, for both teachers and students.

Association for Learning Technology 2012 International Conference

Overarching theme:  Confrontation with reality

When: Tuesday, 11 September to Thursday, 13 September 2012

Where: University of Manchester, The Visitors Centre, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL www.manchester.ac.uk

More information and how to book from ALT website: click here

How to get there: click here and here

The time, effort and money that learners invest in their education need to be matched by commensurate learning experiences, improved use of technology in learning, and effective methods of delivery, all underpinned by sustainable business models. Here are three of the hard questions that we face, both as institutions and as individuals, each centred on the development of knowledge about technology in learning:

How can learning technology better support the core processes of learning, teaching, assessment, recruitment and retention?

What will be the place of open educational resources and other kinds of free, shared, low cost or informal support and organisation in good provision?

How should we respond to learners themselves, who are increasingly voluble in their desire for value for money and for effective use of technology?

Speaking in June 1962, John F. Kennedy railed against our tendencies to “hold fast to the clichés of our forbears”, “subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations”, and “enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought”. He called for a “new, difficult, but essential confrontation with reality”.

The conference themes will be:

Problem solving– finding effective solutions to technical problems, and using learning technology to solve institutional problems;

Mainstreaming– applying learning technology on a large scale in pioneering ways that enthuse learners and are welcomed by teachers and administrators;

Openness and sharing– methods and frameworks for collaboration and sharing of knowledge and resources between practitioners and between providers, and the evidence to justify this;

Sustainability– of technologies, models, and approaches;

Entrepreneurialism– moving resources from where they have low yield for learning and for learners to where their yield is higher.

Plenary presenters: Eric Mazur, Natasa Milic-Frayling and Richard Noss

Welcoming address: Nancy Rothwell.

ALT-C 2012 will provide a valuable and practical forum for practitioners, researchers, managers and policy-makers from education and industry to come together to explore, reflect, influence and learn.

While you are booking your place at the ALT 2012 Conference you may wish to watch a short talk given by Ayah Bdeir who introduces littleBits, a set of simple, interchangeable blocks that make programming as simple and important a part of creativity as snapping blocks together.
